New Flat Pack Boat For Water Rescue
11-07-2005
Hughes Decon Systems has added a new light-weight boat to its range of water rescue products. Suitable for inland and coastal waters, the PORTAbote is tough, stable and virtually unsinkable. Although it is new to the UK, more than 100,000 have been sold worldwide over the past 25 years.
It costs less than an inflatable of the same size, is quicker to deploy, more resistant to punctures and requires a smaller outboard motor for the same performance.
When not in use, PORTAbote folds into a compact, flat package less than 12cm deep that is easy to store and transport. It is small enough to be stored permanently on rescue vehicles and can be hand-carried to remote locations. Once at an incident it unfolds in seconds and is ready to launch. Removable seats are provided and an optional outboard motor can be fitted to extend the boat’s range and capability.
The PORTAbote is available in four models from 8’ to 14’ long and is made from high-impact polypropylene, originally developed for the aerospace industry. It is extremely tough and unaffected by salt or acid. A unique flotation system of foam inserts around the hull ensures buoyancy in adverse conditions. The boat requires no maintenance and is covered by a 10 year warranty.
“Safety and stability are obviously important design requirements for rescue craft,” explains Andy Whitehead, Sales Manager, Hughes Decon Systems. “Ease of handling, in and out of the water, is also essential for a fast response to incidents.”
The PORTAbote has been rigorously tested in America and now in Europe. It complies with all US coastguard specifications and carries a CE mark.
This is the latest addition to the Hughes range of water rescue products which include dry suits, inflatable stretchers and rescue walkways
